PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Oxford College’s 16-month Primary Care Paramedic diploma program combines classroom learning with extensive hands-on training to prepare you for the realities of emergency care. You’ll build practical skills through 480 hours of lab training, clinical placements and ambulance-based training while preparing for the Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA) examination.

90% of Oxford graduates are hired as paramedics within six months of completing the program, reflecting the strong ongoing demand for trained paramedics across Ontario. It’s a career that calls for compassion, quick thinking, technical skill and the ability to stay focused under pressure — all while doing work that can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

10-2 · WHAT YOUR 16 MONTHS WILL LOOK LIKE
01
SEMESTER 1
Build a foundation in anatomy, physiology, patient assessment and pathophysiology, with 120 hours of lab training.
02
SEMESTER 2
Develop skills in pharmacology, advanced patient care, driver training and legal and ethical practice.
03
SEMESTER 3
Apply your skills through hospital clinical placements, emergency simulations and 16 hours of practical lab training each week.
04
SEMESTER 4
Complete ambulance ride-outs, consolidate your training and prepare for the AEMCA examination.

Train for real-world paramedic work.

ASSESS & TREAT PATIENTS
Learn anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and patient care. Build the skills to assess medical and trauma emergencies, make treatment decisions and provide safe pre-hospital care.
RESPOND IN REAL-WORLD SETTINGS
Practise patient care, body mechanics, ambulance operations and crisis intervention through hands-on labs, hospital clinical placements and ambulance ride-outs.
PREPARE FOR THE PROFESSION
Develop communication, documentation, legal and ethical decision-making and teamwork skills while consolidating your training and preparing for the AEMCA examination.

Admission requirements

To be considered for the Primary Care Paramedic program, you need to meet one of the following three routes.

ROUTE ONE
Ontario Secondary School Diploma
Plus senior Biology, senior Chemistry and Grade 12 Math — or Oxford’s PCP Prep Course.
ROUTE TWO
Mature Student Status
Also with senior-level Biology, Chemistry and Grade 12 Math — or Oxford’s PCP Prep Course, which covers them for you. Built for career changers.
BEFORE CLINICAL PLACEMENT
A current immunization record, a clear CPIC police check and physical abilities clearance.
